"I think the problem, to be quite honest with you is that you've never actually known what the question was."World of Chaos (WoC) is a role playing game based on the Rifts RPG. It is a Post-Apocalyptic Cyberpunk/Horror/Fantasy game. We create characters and write stories loosely based in the Rifts megaverse and other cross-genre fiction.
The premise is very versatile. Stories and characters can be dark or violent, funny or light-hearted, or heroes or villains. We have power-armored soldiers, psychic vampires, sorcerers, werewolves, cyborgs, mutants, cybernetic augmentations, dragons, multi-dimensional aliens and, of course, humans. You can travel through time and to other dimensions, other worlds and alternate realities. Magic exists alongside highly-advanced technology. Aliens and Robots co-exist with Vampires and Wizards. The world is Earth, but hundreds of years into the future.
This is a members only RPG and forum. There is no open registration. You must use the Application to apply to become a member. Membership is not guaranteed. Applicants must be 18+ and meet certain writing and RPG experience criteria to be considered for membership.
Please read the information on the website before filling out the Application. The website and FAQ should answer most of your questions about the game's premise and what writing and RPG experience we are looking for from new members.
Please take the time to follow instructions and to fill out the Application completely. Blank or inappropriate responses, not providing a writing sample long enough for assessment, not having a valid email address, etc., will result in your application being rejected.
If your writing sample and other answers meet our criteria, I will contact you for further information and to discuss your joining the group. You can ask more questions about the game and members at that time. If mutually agreed that you will be a good fit for the game, I will then request a character biography, which will need to be approved before adding you as a member. It is strongly advised that you have read at least the current chapter by this time so you are aware what is going on in the plot and character storylines. Once your character is approved, I will then add you as a registered member to the forum and you will be able to begin posting.
If your application is rejected, you will be informed why it was denied. You may apply again if you wish. (Unless it's one of those prank apps or just spam, then you will get nothing but deleted from my inbox.)
Those are all various names for the same thing: a role playing game where members create characters and take turns writing a story based in some genre of fiction, movies, TV, history, etc. There is usually a Game Master (GM) who manages the game and creates the plots or missions for the rest of the group to participate in.
RPG is Role Playing Game. PBem and PBF are Play By eMail and Play By Forum. Sim, short for Simulation, is a common term for a role playing game; live chat, email or forum.
Forums are easier to manage. Email sims often run into significant problems with lost and delayed mails that cause story splits and constant continuity issues. Using a forum allows us to edit posts, use images, music, text formatting and flexibility with all of our content and resources available in one place, at a glance. A forum is also more of a social community than an email-based RPG because it is easier to communicate with all members.
Novel style. Like reading a book. Third person subjective, limited or omniscient, past tense, with some leniency for style, the multiple PoVs of Joint Posts and game mechanics. The stories are divided into chapters, with each chapter being a mission or story arc.

This game is rated R or Mature. There are Adult Themes, strong language, intense depictions of violence, drugs, sci fi action, horror, sexual activity, nudity, sorcery, paganism, and other story elements and images that are not appropriate for children.
I have posted several notices of the mature rating of this game throughout this site and on the forums but I have no way to enforce age verification. If an applicant is a minor, their application will be denied. Should it be later discovered that a member lied to us and is underage, they will be removed from the game immediately.
No.
We don't adhere strictly to the Rifts Universe canon and we take a lot of liberties to create our own content, but we do use Rifts as our foundation and reference source. We tweak, flaunt, embellish, alter and create what we want. No one is going to go canon-nazi on you if you don't stick to the source books verbatim. Nor will we be annoyed if you choose to follow the canon for the most part, as long as it doesn't conflict with currently established WoC canon and characters.
We chose to go easy on the canon and leave lots of room to create the world as we wanted it to be. This might make things a bit disorienting to anyone who is well-read on any of these various genres and games but if you are tolerant of flaunting canon a bit here and there, then it should be no problem.
We are a Special Ops unit of the United Resistance Army. Our characters are members of the Resistance cell based in The City. The cell HQ is Black Jack's Club, a nightclub casino and brothel. The commander is a Captain in the URA and manages a team of mixed military and civilian personnel known as Black Jack's team.
We've tried to keep our location on Rifts Earth vague. It's not a place you'll find in any of the books. We are not in Coalition Territory or any other known territory or faction controlled area. We leave out the exact details of where "The City" is. That leaves us a lot of wiggle room for making up whatever we like.
The City is neutral territory, but known as a base of operations for several Earth factions, both human and D-Bee. Black Jack's team and the URA are fighting the multi-dimensional beings that are trying to conquer Earth via control of the Rifts, the Ley Lines that allow the multiverse to exist.
This story is told via the lives of the people that live in this insane world: our characters. Our stories are character driven, not mission driven as most RPGs are.
It might be easier to say what is not allowed. No anime ninjas or Harry Potters or pirates or Darth Vaders or Gorean Masters or yiffy furries. Don't assume that just because this is a mature game that it's nothing but erotica or cybersex role play.
Rifts allows for a very wide variety of characters and roles: vampires, cyborgs, aliens, mutants, wizards, etc. Pretty much anything from sci-fi, horror and fantasy. I am pretty lenient about character types, as long as they are well thought out and interesting and don't duplicate a character another member is playing. There can be two wizards, but they must have significant differences.
Rifts is rife with imbalance. No one expects an unaugmented human to be able to stand up to a Glitter Boy. Realistically, such incidents would occur, but for game purposes we have to be creative and manipulate the scenes in our favor where the team would otherwise be easily decimated simply because they didn't have equal equipment or abilities. We assemble teams based on the parameters of the missions or situations. Some plots evolve with surprising twists and characters just need to manage to stay alive, even if realistically, the foe would have obliterated them.
Just keep in mind... if your character is so powerful the rest of the team is not needed, then you negate the reason you would need to be on the team in the first place.
Yes! We encourage you to create and play more than one main character. We have a few we consider full-time mains and some we consider part-timers. And then another set that are just occasional NPCs.
We want the stories to be more about the people in them rather than the events happening to them. We spend a good deal of time on character development, not just during down-time between missions, but during missions too. Dialog, character quirks, pets, apartments, friends, family, etc., all fill in the details of your character's lives. We don't want to see just what Joe does while on duty. No one's life is on hold until it's time to post, "Joe detonated the C-4 and the entire complex imploded." We want to know who your character is, how he feels, what his life is like; not just see him flex his muscles or his brain while he's on a mission.
We usually have a main plot and several subplots running concurrently. The main plot is the current mission or story arc and the subplots might be character development or subsidiary events that may or may not relate to or interact with the main plot at any time. Subplots may simmer in the background for weeks or even months before they are fully activated and emerge as a main plot. We have multiple levels of stories weaving in and out of the lives of the characters and affecting the main story line.
Multiple subplots allow us to use several characters at once or to side-line them as needed. Like in a novel, the story is never about just the protagonist. It must be filled out with other characters to make the world come alive. As a small sim group, we want to allow room for multiple characters and stories to be occurring at the same time. Not all the characters and stories have to be within the main plotline. They can exist as their own subplots within the overall story arc.
No. Not at all.
You are certainly welcome to read previous chapters if you wish, but it is not required. When you join the game your character is new to the team so would have no realistic reason to know anything about the other characters. (Unless you create a character that is supposed to have a past with one or more members of the current team.) Your character should have some familiarity with the world (unless he's a recently arrived D-Bee) but those details can be picked up over time. Until you become more familiar with the game canon; locations, people, history, you can be vague about those kinds of details or ask the GM or other members for information.
Because when we moved the original forum and website to the new domain, I transferred all the information and 7 months worth of posts myself, reposting everything over the course of about 3 days at the same time as creating the new website and tweaking the forum appearance and settings and stuff like that there. July 14-17, 2007. (The old forum was not an Invision board and I could not back up the database for a simple export.) Chapters 1 - 6 were copied from the old forum.
I took some liberties and short cuts there at about Ch. 4 and just did some long-ass copying and pasted them all in as one long post instead of continuing to break them down as individual posts.
I was tired.
These are the rules and guidelines of the posting format for the Chaos Chronicles forum. All the components required and the mechanics of how to do the role play posts are explained. It also includes the rules for collaborating on writing posts and posting and forum etiquette.
" ... the script here is not the Bible. Do you, and I'll follow. I got mine, you get yours." Bernie Mac
Meaning, we share the writing here. We make it up as we go along and we act and react to whatever the others are doing. The writing has a natural flow to it and things just ... happen.
I expect posts at least twice a month from each player. Less than that loses the momentum of the story and prevents the other members from being able to write as they wish. While two posts a month is the requirement, the pace is frequently much faster and nearer to two per week.
Less than two posts a month and people have to go back and re-read to remember what was going on or to pick up on details they need to refer to in their own posts. Waiting on responses or plot advancement, especially if the pace has been steady and is suddenly brought to a halt by one or more members going inactive is a Sim Killer. If your character is involved in a dialog or an action scene and the scene cannot advance without your OOC input or your character's reactions, then you need to post your part as soon as possible or let the GM know you are unavailable so your part can be written out or NPC'd so the scene can move on. It's unfair to hold everyone hostage for days while waiting on you to post.
It's expected that the pace may lag during holidays, special events, the summertime and interludes between chapters.
Novel style. Like reading a book. Third person subjective, limited or omniscient, past tense, with leniency for style, the multiple PoVs of Joint Posts and game mechanics. The stories are divided into chapters, with each chapter being a mission or story arc.
First and second person are commonly used in table top RPGs but not in writing RPGs. Third person limited, present tense, or script style, is very common in email and forum RPGs.
No: 1st person PoV:
I walked into the room and saw her aim the gun at me and I said, "Whoa, don't shoot!"
No: 2nd person PoV:
You move your mage to the other side of the river.
No: 3rd person limited, present tense PoV/Script style:
ex #1: Lt. Red Shirt: *She lifts her soft shoulders in a small shrug and smiles up at him.* I don't know what you want from me?
ex #2: Ensign Red Shirt lifts her soft shoulders in a small shrug and smiles up at him. "I don't know what you want from me," she says.
Don't write like that. It makes me cringe. Seriously.
Yes: 3rd person subjective, limited/omniscient PoV, past tense:
"Your realm of affairs?" she said quietly. "Your realm of affairs entails whatever I need at the time." She took a breath, to keep her temper in check. "Location, threat assessment and security were your purview in this instance. However, it is 100% my fault for letting her get within reach of me. I let down my guard. No matter how much preparation or security is in place, I am personally responsible for my own safety."
She studied Gabriel for a moment then, curious at his reaction to Eliza. "Now then, you said she finds you 'unpalatable.' How do you mean? Is your synthetic blood toxic to her? Or is your ... " she paused, unsure how to ask him about his soul, " ... psionic energy toxic?"
Gabriel was still a long moment, his strange eyes seeming to study the glass he held. Something flickered over his ever neutral expression. The briefest flash of a self-contained anger escaping free. He closed his eyes like a man fighting back illness. When he spoke his voice gave nothing.
"A reasonable interpretation of her reaction would be that my psionic energy in whatever manner that it is put out, is extremely offensive to her. After direct eye contact even briefer than that she made with you, she recoiled from me violently and threatened to, as I recall, open my skull and see if anything of a man was left."
Components of a post should include the Chapter number and title, an opening OFF if needed, the ON, a Location tag, Time tag if needed, the Content of the post, the closing OFF and the Sign Off.
Chapter # : Title The header of the post should have the current Chapter number and Title. Chapter 1 : Genesis. The GM chooses the title, which is usually based on the theme or plot of the current chapter.
OFF: Where you can put OOC information. It can be about RL, such as it's your birthday and you won't be around to JP later, or it can be information about your post, a question or explanation, or a comment on another writer's post, etc.
ON: This signals where the OOC portion of the post ends and the IC portion begins. Everything following the ON should be in character content only.
Location: Location is entered right after the ON. e.g., ON: The City, Militia HQ. Each post needs to state where your character or scene is located. We open each post with a location tag. This can vary. It can be The City, Black Jack's, The Casino or as simple as Sin's Apartment. If the location needs to be concealed so as not to reveal a surprise in the scene, try to at least indicate region, such as The City or Outland.
Time: Time is entered after the ON and Location. A Time tag might be needed if the time of day or night the scene is occurring is important. It might be a flash back or flash forward. It might be another timeline. Time tags are useful if the scene requires synchronizing with other posts. Sometimes a post will need to be back-timed to insert it's timing into the chronological order of the previous scenes. This is not the same as a flash back. Time tags are not required if not necessary for the scene or the time needs to be vague.
Content: The In Character portion of your post. Action, dialog, internal monologues, exposition, etc. Everything that is the scene you are writing to advance the story.
OFF: This is where you can add more OOC information. If you need a specific person or persons to respond to your post, you can tag and name them here. Other instructions or explanations can go here too; things like, "don't advance the time line yet," or "please don't have so-and-so leave the office yet," or other instructions when you need the scene to not deviate too far from a certain direction or you would like another player to follow up in a certain way. The closing OFF is for minor scene directions and requests. Anything major, like plot twists that could alter the entire plot or make a major impact on your's or another's character, should be discussed with the GM via email, PMs or the Plot Dev forum.
Sign Off: This is where your character signature belongs. The name(s), and rank or title if applicable, of the character(s) you used in the post.
We use either a Tag or arrange for a Joint Post, also known as a JP. Sometimes borrowing, or taking temporary control of another's character is done, but only lightly, for a brief, obvious or standard reaction or reply.
Never take extensive or prolonged control of another's character. Do not have them behave or speak in a manner that would be out of character. If in doubt, ask for permission, or approval of your idea and input on how that character would react or what they would say, or do a tag or arrange a JP. (Infractions or misuse may result in a revision or deletion of the post by the GM.)
Tag: When a scene ends where it requires another player's character to act or speak, picking up where you left off, you can just leave your post hanging there, mid-scene (preferably in an exciting, cliffhanger moment, although usually it's just mundane story progression dialog) and then in the closing OFF at the end of the post, specifically say who you are tagging to respond. For example: OFF: Tag Thorn.
If it's going to be a long post or will require a series of short posts, it is best if you alert the other player that you plan to tag them so they can be prepared to reply. Or you can contact them to arrange a Joint Post.
I don't like the
That method has a LOT of problems. It forces the tagged player to write responses specifically to fit into whatever the original player wrote all the characters' reactions would be to the
The
Joint Post: A post written cooperatively between two or more players. Especially if the scene will be heavy with dialog, it is best if you do a JP rather than a long, alternating series of one or two line dialog posts. Long, complicated and heavily interactive scenes are also better if done as a JP. Depending on preferences and availability, a joint post is done via emails or IMs. This allows for discussion about what is expected or to plan out the scene and dialog, although sometimes just writing it together and staying in character with no OOC information exchanged can also be fun. Then one of the players posts it to the forum, making sure to indicate it was a JP, including the names of both (or all) writers in the Sign Off.
Do feel free to ask questions and make suggestions. All members are encouraged to suggest plot and character development as well as ideas for future chapters. The GM has final say, but is open to brainstorming ideas.
Veteran members who are willing may also have opportunities to GM a chapter; from planning to implementation, to managing the entire development and progression of the chapter's mission or goal, as well as guiding and facilitating all character interactions and development within the parameters of that chapter's plot line.
Do feel free to be creative and write long posts and go off on tangents of subplots with alternate characters and create delightful details that fill in the atmosphere of the world. Vignettes and character development are encouraged and indulged. Wallowing in char dev is one of our favorite things to do in this game.
Do be friendly. Please make use of the OOC forum for RL chatting and use the Plot Dev forum to discuss the plots and other sim information. Don't be offended if some members aren't chatty or reply infrequently. Not everyone likes to interact out of character, preferring instead to maintain the mystique and not dilute immersion by revealing the player behind the character. And some prefer to lurk and are not inclined to reply. Give others time to get to know you. Not everyone is instant friends just because they sim together. Respect each other's privacy and comfort levels. There's nothing wrong with being shy or sociable, just remember some need time to warm up or are just naturally quiet.
Do please use other's characters sparingly if you are not doing a Joint Post. Most players don't mind when another borrows their character for a scene as long as it is brief and doesn't have them behaving out of character, but some players are very much bothered by others using their characters. Some prefer not to allow it at all. Please be sure to ask and find out if it is okay with the player before you use their character. Do not be offended or take it personally if they say no. Some people just prefer to never have their character out of their control or they are only comfortable with a certain few people using them; ones they have learned over time that they can trust to play the character faithfully. If they say no, then ask to do a JP.
Do try to be aware of sim time and the locations and current activities of all the other characters in the storyline. Make sure you are reading all the posts and be careful to take note of details that you might need to refer to in your posts. This will prevent story splits, such as out of synch sim time, posting a character in two places at once, or doing conflicting scenes where one person says this happened but another person says that happened; all splits that the GM will have to fix.
Do try to be at least somewhat familiar with the other character's biographies. You don't need to know them as well as you do your own, but it helps prevent mistakes if you've read them and are aware of backgrounds, abilities, personality traits, etc. Check back occasionally to see if the bios have been updated or altered, and also check for details when you post to be sure you aren't conflicting with that character's "canon." If you are unsure of a character's abilities or history and need the information for a post, please ask them to clarify it or fill in more details.
Do please try to be careful to not write your character knowing things about another character that they can't possibly know, but that you, the player knows from reading the bio or posts with internal monologues or other information that your character couldn't otherwise know about that character.
Don't harm or otherwise inflict actions an another's character without permission. This includes fight scenes, dialog, sex and other actions that might permanently change the character's development or subplots. Try to think of those kinds of scenes as if you were playing an RPG that required a dice roll before an action. You have to wait and see the outcome of the dice to determine if it succeeds or fails. Think of the other player as the dice. Such as, don't write your character kicking the crap out of another player's character. If you plan the scene in advance and have the other player's permission or participation, that is okay, but be careful you do not overstep the boundaries.
For example: I logged on to a Star Trek sim one day and was shocked to find out another player had posted that his character and mine had sex on screen, in full view of the entire bridge crew and later that my character was pregnant with his twins. All done without prior notice or permission. Don't do things like that.
Don't time jump or make a major impact on the plot or other characters without permission or instructions from the GM to do so. Only the GM may advance the plot or timeline unless otherwise instructed. If a story split does occur, the GM may ask you to edit or revise your post, or the GM might do it to fix the discrepancy. In extreme circumstances of time jumping, story splitting or character breaking, the GM might need to delete the post entirely. You might be able to post it again later, when the timing is correct or if the discontinuity is edited out. The GM might also need to do some back-timed posts or call a posting time out until a sim-time synching post or posts have been done.
Don't use or kill other's characters or NPCs without permission. The GM may kill off generic or utility NPCs without notice but will never kill another player's NPC without permission.
Don't have your character doing things that are not within their abilities, part of their skillset or that is the role of another player. Such as, if you are an engineer, you can't suddenly perform brain surgery on an injured comrade. If you do such things, they need to be plausible, such as techno wizardy, cyberware skill mods, telepathy, demonic possession...
Don't God Mode. Don't do the impossible. Stay true to the premise and reality rules of the "world" we are playing in. Granted, in this game, we take a lot of liberties and don't adhere to canon and there are supreme beings and multidimensional alternate realities, but there are no all powerful, all knowing entities that can affect the world with the wave of a hand or a mere thought. Your character cannot single-handedly fend off the entire Splugorthian Empire. God mode posts will be deleted. Repeated infractions of god moding will result in probation or a ban.
Don't be a spelling, grammar or canon nazi. We all make typos and forget how to spell or the proper grammar or punctuation on occasion. Some RPGs are locked down by canon and no deviations are allowed, but this game is not limited by canon. Some of us are just bad spellers or don't know a participle from an adverb, and maybe don't know diddly about Rifts, magic or weapons tech, but if you can write well, I don't care. Good writing isn't spelling and grammar or knowing the specs for a Glitterboy rail gun. It's creativity and characters and stories that are compelling and entertaining reading and that's what matters here.
Don't mix IC and OOC. No crossover drama, please. If you can't keep what happens to your character in game separate from your RL feelings, then you could soon find yourself removed from the game. You will be posting alone. No one will respond to your scenes. No one will want to risk upsetting you and they will dread and resent having to baby you if they are forced to interact with your character. Crossers are like nitro and no one wants to handle it because you never know what will set it off.
If you have spouse/other aggro issues, keep it out of the game. I will repeat that. If you have spouse/other aggro issues -- keep it out of the game. Crossover and RL drama just ruins the game for everyone and it will not be allowed. I will ban a member who indulges in such drama. If it continues, they will be permanently banned and removed from membership.
Don't use in game IC situations or dialog to attack or insult another player OOC. I've seen too many people in other games use their character to insult or bully another player. Offensive comments and scenes will be deleted if it appears to be done maliciously and not as a true in character dialog or action. Your character can be unlikable, rude, mean, nasty and despicable, and other's characters can react negatively to that, as long as it is all IC, but if it appears to be a thinly-veiled insult meant to hurt someone OOC, it will be deleted and I may be inclined to ban the offensive member.
Don't make personal attacks on another member or remark disparagingly on the content of their posts. If you have a problem with or questions about another member or what they have posted, PM or email that person or the GM. OOC/RL hostility on the forum will not be tolerated.
Don't make personal hostile remarks in any areas of the forum. OOC Drama will not be tolerated. Don't poison the sim by instigating drama on the forum or privately in emails or IMs. If you have a problem, contact me at Mystyrys at gmail.com. This is my website. This is my forum. I pay for it. I run this game and I decide what will and will not be acceptable.
If you know in advance you will not be able to participate or need time out, please let the GM know so adjustments can be made to the plot to accommodate your absence. If your absence is unexpected and I don't hear from you within 2 weeks, I will write your character out of the current scenes. If you are absent without notice for over a month, your character will be removed from the story line. If absent without notice and no contact is made for 90 days, you will be removed as a member of the forum and will no longer be able to post. Your character(s) will be written out of the story and your character bio(s) will be moved to Tombstone.
Images may be used in your posts.
To add an image to your post, when in the Reply form, click the Insert Image icon (just to the right of the smilies). Enter the URL of the image and click Okay. You can justify the alignment too, using the formatting tools on the Reply form.
Please make sure the images are not large files in kbs or in pixel measurement. Reduce them to a lower file size if you can, or send them to me and I will do it. Large files slow down the board and the image gallery and can break the alignment of the forum display. For example, do not post an 800x600 bmp image. It will make the page display offset, breaking the layout of the forum and will affect every post after it. The page will load slower and the image itself will load very slowly. If a topic begins to lag due to too many images or overly large images and file sizes, I will edit or delete the images.
Image sizes are restricted. Any images posted with the [IMG] tag will be resized by 50% to prevent large images from breaking the layout of the board. Size restrictions for attached thumbnails are set to 300 x 300. Images that are too big, and/or break the alignment of the forum will be edited or deleted by me. Please reduce and resize if your images are large.
Allowed image file types are: bmp, gif, jpeg, jpg, png.
I upload character and other images to our Gallery. Email me if you wish to have images added to the Gallery. You can use the Gallery to find the image you want and the name of that file when you wish to use them in a post.
Please, do not hot link to the Gallery images outside of the game. Download it and use it from your own bandwidth.
You may use links to music in your posts.
