Introduction:
Welcome to World of Chaos
What
kind of Sim/RPG is this?
Cathy: This is a collaborative writing role playing
game. It is similar to a PBeM (Play By eMail) RPG in that there is
a
GM and other writers/players who work
together taking turns writing posts to create a story that is guided in
the plot development by the GM. This particular RPG uses a forum instead of
email.
It is very loosely based in the Rifts
RPG with elements of Cyberpunk and other Science-Fiction, Fantasy and
Horror genres all blended into one game world. The premise is very
versatile. Stories and characters can be dark and violent or funny and
light-hearted. We have power-armored soldiers, psychic vampires, trolls,
sorcerers, werewolves, cyborgs, mutants, aliens and, of course,
humans. You can travel through time, to other dimensions or to other
worlds. Magic exists alongside highly-advanced technology. Aliens co-exist
with Vampires and Wizards. The world is Earth, but hundreds of years into
the future.

In the Beginning...
No-one
knows when the Coming of the Rifts occurred. At least no-one on this
planet, anyway. An intellectual few have an idea, but that's based on
conjecture and shaky research. There is overwhelming evidence that the
planet was in a Golden Age of advanced science. Poverty was all but
abolished, cancers were cured, and off-world colonisation was beginning to
flourish.
But as to how this all changed, is open to
debate.
What is generally accepted is that a staggering amount of
death was the catalyst. One of these nations on this small, insignificant
world decided to declare total war on the other with their nuclear
arsenal. Allies retaliated, and the die was cast. By a terrible chance, a
planetary alignment was also in session, which weakened the bridge between
Space-Time. As the death tolls rose to the billions, the energies released
were magnified by the on-going celestial formation.
Before the
surviving population could blink, the dimensions imploded, and nothing was
the same any more.
Demons, so-called Gods, aliens, dimensional
invaders and a vast swathe of others which defy classification, swarmed
through the Rifts that were created by Ley Lines converging with others.
Like moths to an inferno.
In the intervening years, the world
changed as Mankind adapted to their new world in vastly different ways.
The government that was once the United States declared a pitiless war
against those who tried to take their world from them. Unfortunately, this
included those who had been changed by the very energies that were a fact
of life in this new status quo. Wars were fought amongst mighty empires,
ideologies clashes just as forcefully as armies.
It was an insane
world, driven mad by their own planet. But despite this, everyone knew
their place: from the persecuted to the emperors.
But then it
changed again.
The 'Chromatic Kings' are an ancient conglomerate of
trans-dimensional warlords - powerful enough to have a Non-Aggression
Treaty with the 'Dimensional Lords' themselves. In addition to immense
multidimensional hordes, they have access to limited dimensional
technology that allows them to enter and exit a finite number of related
dimensional membranes. In their long long history, they have sent their
forces to these planes, subjugating trillions of worlds. It is testimony
to how insignificant Earth was that they never bothered to invade before
now.
Each 'Chromatic King' is based in a region around the
multiverse that connected to several 'adjacent' dimensions. A few of the
dimensional regions overlap with the regions of other 'Chromatic Kings',
creating a contest to control disputed dimensions. Because the Chromatic
Kings can only enter a limited number of dimensions, and then only at
specific 'contact points', their assaults on one another are confined by
various 'bottlenecks.'
When Earth experienced its dimensional
fracture, it opened random portals throughout the multiverse, including
the regions of the various Chromatic Kings. When the Chromatic Kings sent
their military to investigate these new portals, they discovered something
extraordinary. There were 'nodes' on Earth that, if captured, would allow
the Chromatic Kings to use their technology to enter ANY dimension at ANY
location. The tactical and strategic value of these nodes is immense. And
this was enough to effectively shatter their once tentative civilisation
for a mad rush for Power Absolute.
The Chromatic Kings immediately
sent their individual forces to capture the nodes and take control of
Earth, and by virtue of that: the multiverse. However, each King is now
directly competing with every other King. In addition, the natives of
Earth and a large number of other visitors' similar intent went to war
with one another and/or the forces of the Chromatic Kings. The planet has
become rife with conflict - more so than ever - and no Node is safe from
an attacking force. While the Chromatic Kings have enough technology and
firepower to reduce the Earth to a dead husk, they have forced themselves
to use great restraint: not least out of fear for destroying the very
dimensional nodes they covet.
Instead, they are now playing the
Long Game. Manipulating individuals behind the scenes, and engineering the
downfall of their own brethren.
The Chromatic Kings are a patient,
almost immortal, race.
They have plenty of time. __________________ "Any sufficiently advanced
